When I first created this blog two years ago, I intended it to be an outlet to share my creative writing for the duration of my time as a student at Rutgers-Newark. My plan was also to keep a record of my experience as a commuter– everything from the interesting personalities I met on the train, to complaints about delays.
But very quickly, the focus of the website evolved as I became more involved with the DREAM ACT Bill. The focus of my writing soon became immigration issues. A close look at my posts illustrates that my principle interest, besides graduating, was sharing the various perspectives of Latino immigrant youth.
This central focus is one that has allowed me to articulate my feelings about the flawed US immigration system that has worked to successfully separate families, criminalize students, and push productive members of society “into the shadows.” Passing of the DREAM ACT and a comprehensive immigration bill are issues that I will continue to support and fight for, however, for the foreseeable future, the focus of my DEARDIEGO Blog will change.
From now on, I will focus my attention, and the content of this site, on planning and realizing a trip around South America.
Beginning on September 1, 2011 until my departure, I will begin posting regular updates about the progress I have made in the current (planning) phase of the trip. Eventually this site will become my digital journal as I travel around South America.
